WHAT IS A MURDER MYSTERY PARTY?
If you’re wondering how to host a murder mystery party, you’ve come to the right place! But what is it, and how do you play? A murder mystery party is an interactive, immersive storytelling experience where participants play characters and work to solve a murder. It’s perfect for friends sitting around a meal, birthdays, work events, or even via Zoom. It combines elements of role-playing, investigation and typically featuring a cast of suspects. It’s a great excuse to dress up, as murder mystery games are often themed. If you’re playing a 70s themed game, picture flares and big hair!
Step 1: Choose your theme
When picking a murder mystery theme, think about how many guests you want to invite and what their interests are. Do they like dressing up? Do they like a particular era, ie 60s or 80s? (tip: including themed music can make your party great fun!) Location also plays an important part in choosing your theme. If it’s the height of summer and you want to host a party outside, a pool party murder mystery is the perfect choice. Or if it’s Halloween, a Halloween murder mystery party set in a spooky location will be a hit with your guests.
Step 2: Choose your costume
This is the fun part! When you assign your guests their characters, they’re free to put as much effort into their costumes as they wish. If you’re playing a 1930s Hollywood murder mystery game then guests might choose to wear tuxedos or gowns with fun accessories. If it’s a wild west theme, then think cowboys and saloon girls. Or if it’s a pool party theme, choose swimming costumes, tropical Hawaiian shirts and fun inflatable accessories. The wackiest, the better. And while everyone’s dressed up in character, why not use a photo booth to make your Insta posts that little bit more special?
